Reducing food loss and waste: A path to a sustainable future

Members of Boroume organization presenting their work

On September 29th, we celebrated the International Day of Awareness on Food Loss and Waste Reduction in an effort to raise awareness inside AKL. Reducing food losses and waste is essential in a world where the number of people affected by hunger has been slowly on the rise since 2014, and tons and tons of edible food are lost and/or wasted every day.

Did you know?

-Globally, 13.2% of food is lost between harvest and retail.

-An estimated 19% of total global food production is wasted in households, food service, and retail.

-Here in Greece, 1/3 of the population lives in poverty or social exclusion (ELSTAT), while the average family wastes 460 portions of food annually (University of Patras).

At our firm, we had the privilege of connecting with “Boroume” ("We Can"), a non-profit organization making a tremendous impact in Greece by fighting food waste and food insecurity. Since 2012, Boroume has saved and donated over 80 million portions of food, valued at €120 million! Every day, they help rescue and offer 35,000 portions of food to those in need.

During our meeting, we picked up some practical and impactful tips to help reduce food waste in our daily lives:

-Shop smart: Plan your meals and make a shopping list to avoid hashtagoverbuying.

-Embrace “ugly” produce: Don’t shy away from imperfect fruits and vegetables—they’re just as nutritious!

-Preserve food properly: Store your food the right way to keep it fresher, longer.

-Maximize your freezer: Freeze leftovers and surplus items to enjoy later instead of letting them go to waste.

Supporting Boroume means directly contributing to a more sustainable and compassionate world. You can meet their incredible team or support their work by donating here: https://www.boroume.gr/en/donate/.
