Clearing the Air: A Legal Examination of Europe's Struggle with Air Pollution and the Role of Citizen Science

AKL Associate

Exciting news for our Associate, Ariti Tsoukala, as she co-authored an article titled "Air Pollution Crisis Across Europe: The European Courts, the Governments, the Citizens and the Persistent Ineffectiveness of EU Law" along with Dr. Kleoniki Pouikli, Assistant Professor in Law and Sustainability, Utrecht University, regarding air pollution across Europe! The article was published in the latest issue of Journal for European Environmental & Planning Law (JEEPL, Brill Nijhoff).

Despite a robust EU regulatory framework since the mid-80s, implementing measures for poor air quality faces persistent challenges. The article, after highlighting enforcement issues and recent legislative updates, explores the air pollution crisis through a human rights perspective, referencing ECtHR Pavlov v. Russia. Additionally, it delves into the potential of citizen science mechanisms as a valuable tool in tackling the air pollution crisis.
